Shoe sizing varies significantly between countries and even between brands within the same country. The US, UK, and EU systems all use different scales, and men's and women's sizes in the US don't correspond to the same foot length. Understanding these differences is essential when buying shoes online from international retailers.
US sizes are based on the barleycorn — an old English unit of 1/3 inch (8.47mm). Each US shoe size represents one barleycorn increment in foot length. Men's and women's US sizes are different scales — a women's size 8 US corresponds to a men's size 6.5 US for the same foot length.
EU sizes (also called Paris points) are based on 2/3 centimeter increments. EU sizes are unisex, though men and women may have different fit preferences in the same EU size due to last (shoe form) differences.
UK sizes are similar to US sizes but offset by approximately 0.5 for men and 2 for women. A men's US 10 = UK 9.5. A women's US 8 = UK 5.5.
