Clothing Size Conversion Guide ()
Clothing sizes vary dramatically between countries, making online shopping from international retailers frustrating without a reference guide. A US women's size 8 is a UK 12, an EU 38, and a French 40. A US men's medium is typically an EU 50, but this varies by brand. Always check the specific brand's size chart when possible, and use measurements when in doubt.

What is a US size 8 in EU?
A US women's size 8 is EU size 38-40, UK size 12, and Italian size 44. For men's, a US size 8 typically refers to a shirt or jacket — US men's 38 chest corresponds to EU 48. Use the converter above and select the appropriate category (women's tops, men's tops etc.) for the most accurate conversion for your garment type.
How do US and UK women's sizes differ?
UK women's sizes are approximately 4 numbers higher than US sizes for the same garment. A US size 4 = UK size 8, US size 8 = UK size 12, US size 12 = UK size 16. This is because the US and UK use different numeric scales for the same body measurements. When shopping from UK retailers like ASOS, Topshop, or Marks & Spencer, add 4 to your US size as a starting point, then check the brand's measurement chart.
What does XS, S, M, L, XL mean in numbers?
Letter sizes correspond roughly to: XS = US 0-2 (women) or 32-34 (men chest), S = US 4-6 (women) or 36-38 (men), M = US 8-10 (women) or 38-40 (men), L = US 12-14 (women) or 42-44 (men), XL = US 16-18 (women) or 44-46 (men). However, these vary significantly by brand, especially in the US where "vanity sizing" has shifted over decades — a modern US size 8 corresponds to measurements that would have been labeled a size 14-16 in the 1950s.
How do I find my correct pants size?
US pants use a two-number system: waist x inseam in inches (e.g., 32x30 means 32-inch waist, 30-inch inseam). Measure your natural waist (usually 1 inch above your belly button) and your inseam (from crotch to ankle). EU/European pants use a single size number based on waist measurement in centimeters divided by 2, then add 10. A 32-inch waist (81cm) ÷ 2 + 10 = 50.5, rounding to EU 50. The Measure Guide tab above helps you find your size from measurements.
Why do clothing sizes vary so much between brands?
Clothing sizes are not standardized — each brand sets its own measurements for each size. "Vanity sizing" is the practice of labeling garments with smaller numbers than their actual measurements to flatter shoppers, and it has become widespread in the US over recent decades. Research has shown that a garment labeled "size 0" today has the same measurements as a garment labeled "size 8" in 1958. European sizing, while imperfect, has remained more anchored to actual body measurements and is generally more consistent across brands.
